“Eating and reading are two pleasures that combine admirably.” C. S. Lewis

There’s more than one way to devour a book!

Cooking the Books has to be one of our favourite evening events. Both my mother and I love to read and enjoy food, but I’m the bookworm of the family and Mum is the wizard at the hobs! So we decided to combine our passions and start a food themed literary club.

For each event, we choose a book that has food as one of its principle themes, and Mum creates a menu through the dishes and recipes described in the book.

The three course dinners have wines that are carefully chosen to complement the menu. You will discuss the book with new people in a relaxed, cosy environment while you experience the book of the month through all the senses, not just reading!

A cozy dining room with a wooden table set with lit candles, wine glasses, cutlery, and flowers in vases. There are mismatched chairs with floral and patterned upholstery around the table. The room has warm lighting, wall art, patterned curtains, and star-shaped decorations hanging from the ceiling, creating a festive atmosphere.

  • The novel our very first Cooking the Books evening was based on: Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Guests enjoyed an evening of tasting real recipes from the book, with carefully paired wines as they discussed this compelling Mexican novel.

February - Like Water for Chocolate

On a chilly February night, we all gathered to share our thoughts on the bestseller by Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel.

  • The second book for our Cooking the Books evening: Heartburn by Nora Ephron. A three course dinner was served based on the recipes listed in this hilarious novel, with different wines for each course included in the ticket price.

    May - Heartburn

The hilarious, yet deeply sad story of renowned writer Nora Ephron, is told through this semi autobiographical novel about a food writer who discovers her husband’s affair.

  • The first Cooking the Books meeting for the cosy season was the iconic classic: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. We hosted what will certainly be the first of more Hobbit suppers.

    October - The Hobbit

Of course, to kick off our Autumn season of Cooking the Books, we had to choose the cosiest book of them all! Although the menu is still to be determined, be sure to get your tickets now and start reading!
